AMSTERDAM — After Monday's public transport woes, the Netherlands was again faced with transport problems on Tuesday, this time on the nation's roads.
A series of accidents caused chaos on motorways during the morning rush-hour, prompting motorists association ANWB to warn the delays would not dissipate until lunchtime.
The biggest problems were reported around Amsterdam after a chain collision took place on the A2 motorway at about 7.20am near Abcoude.
Eleven cars were involved and three people injured, one of whom was taken to hospital with neck injuries.
Onlookers caused the biggest traffic jam on the Utrecht-to-Amsterdam lanes. A 20km traffic jam developed. At about 10.30am, police re-opened the two closed lanes.
A 10km traffic jam built up on the Utrecht-bound lanes. Motorists who wished to take the A9 to Utrecht were delayed, leading to stalled traffic on the A4, A9 and A10 motorways.
Between Hoogmade and knooppunt De Nieuwe Meer, a traffic jam of 14km was reported.
Meanwhile, nine cars were involved in a chain collision on the A4 near Leidschendam, leading to a 25km traffic jam between Rotterdam and Leidschendam.
On the A20 at Rotterdam, a 19km traffic jam was reported and a 13km traffic jam was reported on the A6 at Almere.
Traffic on the A27 also encountered problems due to an accident. Traffic came to a halt between Almere-Stad and Bilthoven.
