21/10/2004A35 claims two more lives

21 October 2004

AMSTERDAM — Two people have been killed and two others seriously injured in a major traffic accident on the A35 near Hengelo. The accident occurred near where five young people were killed last weekend.

A woman, 65, and her daughter, 37, became the latest victims on the A35. Three cars, a truck from the Czech Republic and a double-decker bus, carrying 85 school children back from an outing to Berlin, were involved in the accident which occurred shortly after 9pm on Wednesday.

News service NOS reported that the bus driver put on his brakes as he approached a traffic jam caused by road works. The truck ploughed into the bus from behind, sandwiching one of the cars between the two larger vehicles.

The truck driver and a woman, 33, from Heerenveen, were rushed to hospital with impact and burn injuries. Two students, both 18, were injured on the bus.

Last weekend, five young people from Zeewolde were killed when the car they were travelling in hit a guard rail and burst into flame on another part of the A35. The police said there was no link between the two accidents.
