03/05/2009Young find Liberation Day more important

Young people find Liberation Day on 5 May more important than Remembrance Day the day before.

THE NETHERLANDS - Young people find Liberation Day on 5 May more important than Remembrance Day the day before. The National Committee for 4 and 5 May - the body that organises the memorial ceremonies in Amsterdam and throughout the country - recently conducted a survey of young people between the ages of 13 and 24.

It found that half of them placed more importance on commemorating the liberation of the Netherlands from the German occupation in 1945 than on remembering the Dutch who have died since the outbreak of the Second World War.

That said, over 70 percent of those surveyed replied that they observed a moment's silence on 4 May. Many of the older among them said that when they did so, they remembered all the victims of the Second World War and not just the Dutch.

Two thirds of those surveyed said they knew quite a lot about the Second World War. However, many of them admitted to a limited knowledge of the consequences of the war waged in Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies, between 1945 and 1949.
