28 January 2008

AMSTERDAM – Right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders said in remarks published Saturday that a film he made about Islam does exist and he plans to release it in March.

Wilder, head of the Freedom Party and controversial because of his outspoken criticism of Islam, made the comment in Saturday's edition of the daily De Telegraaf newspaper.

His remark comes amid reports by several Dutch media outlets last week which suggested that the film might not even exist.

The film was first reported on in November by De Telegraaf, which said Wilders was working on a film that would, in his words, "prove that the Islam is a backward religion and the Koran a fascist book."

Although no further information has been released about the film, Dutch media have since been reporting incessantly about it.

The Dutch government has openly distanced itself from the film, admitting it fears a situation comparable to 2006 when a Danish daily newspaper published cartoons of Mohammed, triggering protests in Muslim countries around the world.

This week, several Moroccan organisations and a group of Dutch launched legal steps in an attempt to get Wilders prosecuted for discrimination and racism.

The Moroccan organisations based their argument upon remarks made by Wilders about Muslims and migrants ever since he was thrown out of the Liberal VVD party in September 2004 and established his own political party.
