The army will help to protect buildings during the tournament.

BERNE - Up to 13,000 soldiers will be on hand to help police with security during Euro 2008 in June, the military said on Thursday.

A spokesman said however the army's main job would be to protect buildings. There would be very little contact between fans and soldiers in uniform in the four host cities of Geneva, Berne, Basel and Zurich.

There would be no military cordon around the stadiums. The army would be involved in erecting barriers. Up to 5.4 million football fans are expected to follow the tournament in Switzerland, including 1.4 million from abroad.
