01/05/2009Speed limit for Dutch caravan-hauling cars raised

Cars towing a caravan will now be allowed to drive at 90kph as of Friday.

THE NETHERLANDS – The maximum driving speeds for cars towing a caravan or trailer have been increased to from 80kph to 90 kph as from 1 May.

The new regulation which will apply to all caravans and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes aims to reduce the number of accidents that take place between track drivers and car drivers.

Truck drivers are not allowed to overtake caravans on many roads and have to trail behind them, leading to much mutual irritation between the drivers and even accidents.

Another new traffic rule stipulates that no driver of any category of motorised vehicle is allowed to use a mobile phone while driving.

This means that drivers of mopeds and light scooters will not be allowed to make calls on the road.
