03/06/2008Somali pirates threaten to kill crew of Dutch ship

The pirates are threatening to kill the crew of four Russian and five sailors if the freighter is stormed, reports Somali radio station.

3 June 2008

BARGAL - The Somali radio station Garowe reports that the hijackers of a Dutch ship off the Somali coast have threatened to kill the crew if the freighter is stormed.

The freighter, the Amiya Scan, is currently at anchor off the port of Bargal in northern Somalia.

Last week, Russia asked the Somali authorities not to endanger the lives of the crew. Moscow made its appeal following reports that Somali soldiers were en route to the ship, which was hijacked by pirates on Sunday. The Dutch freighter has four Russian officers and five Filipino sailors on board.

The UN Security Council has meanwhile adopted a resolution on piracy off the Somali coast. The resolution calls on nations to deploy ships and planes in collaboration with the Somali government to hunt the pirates down.
