The crew of the ship Persistence stopped searching for the body of missing American teenager Natalee Holloway off the coast of Aruba over the weekend.

ORANJESTAD – The crew of the ship Persistence stopped searching for the body of missing American teenager Natalee Holloway off the coast of Aruba over the weekend.

The ship is now headed to its home port in Louisiana in the US since its funding has been exhausted. Investigative agency Texas EquuSearch reported this on Monday.

Holloway's parents recently announced that they would continue searching for their missing daughter with the sonar craft the Persistence.

The funding from American donors has now run dry however. The crew of the ship has been scanning the sea floor around Aruba since mid December of last year. The operation has cost several million dollars already.

The Holloways believe that their daughter's body was dumped at sea by Joran van der Sloot's accomplices. Van der Sloot was reportedly the last person to see Natalee alive.

In January the ship's sonar hit upon a suspicious fishing net containing textile scraps. For a short time it was thought that this may have been material from Natalee's clothing, but laboratory tests have since indicated that this is not the case.

The crew says on its weblog that it has found hundreds of 'suspicious' objects that need further investigation.

"When we came here we thought we'd find Natalee, or at least exhaust all the possibilities. Now we are leaving so many questions unanswered, although we can come back to dive. We feel that the search is not over, but has entered a new phase," the crew writes.
