14/08/2008Purchasing power dominates Dutch ministers’ pre-budget talks

Finance Minister Wouter Bos says he understands people's worries about purchasing power and is considering postponing a planned rise in VAT.

THE HAGUE - Speaking after the first cabinet discussions on the 2009 budget, Dutch Finance Minister Wouter Bos said he understood people's worries about purchasing power.

Over the coming weeks, ministers will have to agree budget proposals for next year, and purchasing power is the hottest issue they have to deal with.

Figures from the Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis show nearly everyone in the Netherlands is worse off than the government forecast.

Bos is considering postponing a planned rise in VAT, but ideas differ about how the shortfall in revenue should be made up.

He refused to be drawn on how the pre-budget talks had gone, but did say that the broadest shoulders would have to bear the heaviest loads. He also refused to say whether everyone's purchasing power will be maintained.
