21/07/2008Proposal to raise retirement age to 70 in Holland

Dutch Justice Minister says the recent recommendation to set it at 67 is insufficient to cope with the country’s greying population.

21 July 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner is considering raising the retirement age to 70.

In a newspaper interview, the minister says the recent recommendation to set it at 67 by the year 2040 will probably be insufficient to cope with the soaring cost of the country's ageing population. A government commission recommended gradually implementing the rise in retirement age from the year 2016.

The minister now says the proposed change will fall short of what is required because, by 2040, life expectancy is likely to have increased by ten years.
