The Dutch pharmacists will be closed between twelve and two in the afternoon on Monday to protest against the system.

16 June 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch pharmacists will hold a protest on Monday against a new reimbursement system for medicines. The pharmacies will close their doors between twelve and two in the afternoon except for emergencies.

As of 1 July, insurance companies will only reimburse the cheapest variety of several dozen commonly used medicines. As a result, pharmacists will lose income because they no longer receive discounts from the pharmaceutical industry.

The branch organisation fears that 40 percent of pharmacists may go bankrupt within three years, and claims that at least 4,000 jobs are at stake.

The National Action Committee Pharmacists expects half of Netherlands’ pharmacies to take part in Monday's protest.
