Big names and odd designers gather on Thursday in Paris to offer their takes on spring and summer wear for men in 2009.

PARIS - Big brands and little-known designers get together in the world's fashion capital this week offering takes on 2009's spring and summer wear for men.

During four days from Thursday onwards, 44 catwalk shows are scheduled in various locations around Paris, from disused garages to football stadiums and luxury hotels.

Paris' big names for men will all be present, including Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, Yohji Yamamoto, Kenzo, Givenchy, John Galliano, Smalto, Emanuel Ungaro, Hermes, Lanvin and Dior Homme.

A further 20-odd designers are inviting buyers and press to view their spring/summer 2009 collections in showrooms, including Yves Saint Laurent designer Stefano Pilati.

Alongside the usual suspects, two newcomers are descending on Paris, both scheduled on Day One of the shows - Kilgour and Julius.

London house Kilgour, which traces its roots back to bespoke tailors in the late 19th century, is a Savile Row house celebrated for its suits for the ultra-chic.

It will be bringing to Paris for the first time collections dreamt up by its designer Carlo Brandelli, who has won several awards in Britain.

Since 2003, the Italian-born stylist has revisited Kilgour's elegance of cut and style that seduced the likes of Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and, more recently, Jude Law and Daniel Craig.

Other newcomer Julius is "not just a brand" but "an exceptional concept and creativity", said a spokesman for the house, which favours black as its colour code, "which symbolises the avant-garde and is very spiritual and noble."

Its Japanese designer, Tatsuko Horikawa, made his fashion debut in Tokyo in 2005 after first working in art, photography and sculpture.

The Paris shows will also unveil the first collection for Thierry Mugler by France's Rosemary Rodriguez.

Appointed in February to take over from US designer Thomas Engelhart, Rodriguez worked with Mugler in the 90s in the womens-wear studio.

Also to watch in the coming days is a first collection for Givenchy by couture's Riccardo Tisci, who takes on the male silhouette after running the venerable house's haute couture and ready-to-wear lines for women.

Bowing out from the world of menswear will be Sonia Rykiel, showing its last-ever loss-making line for men after 18 years.
