10/07/2008New bicycles in Netherlands to have unique frame number

The new ruling to have a unique frame number for all new bicycles in the Netherlands by 2010 aims to prevent bicycle theft.

10 July 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - By 2010, all new bicycles in the Netherlands must have a unique frame number.

Interior Minister Guusje ter Horst and Deputy Minister of Transport Tineke Huizinga see the new ruling as an important factor in the battle against bicycle theft.

It is hoped that frame numbers will make identification easier and so reduce the trade in stolen bikes.

The MPs also want to encourage people to put a frame number on their bikes now, but do not want to make that compulsory. In the Netherlands, more than 10 million bicycles have no such number.

In 2006, more than 750,000 bikes were stolen. The MPs want to see that figure reduced to 650,000 by 2010.
