More than 300 people are tested positive for HIV cases in 2007 in the Netherlands.

THE NETHERLANDS - The number of Dutch people known to be carrying the HIV virus has increased according to a report by the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

The virus has been detected more often because of a change to the testing procedure in clinics dealing with sexually transmitted diseases. Anyone who takes a test for a sexually transmitted disease is now automatically tested for HIV as well.

In 2007, more than 300 people tested positive for HIV, 20 percent more than in 2006.

The Netherlands intends to hold an international donor conference to draw more attention to the problem of HIV sufferers who are also drug addicts.

Bert Koenders, the Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation made the pledge at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City. Koenders said more money needs to be available for programmes for drug addicts with HIV.

At present, just 1 percent of the global budget for HIV prevention goes to programmes for addicts, even though they represent one of the largest groups of those infected with the virus.
