The Netherlands rank ninth in the Olympic medals tables with one gold, one silver and one bronze.

BEIJING - At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Dutch judoka Deborah Gravenstijn has won a silver medal in the women's 57 kg category.

In the final, she lost to Italy's Giulia Quintavalle. Nevertheless it was a good day for Gravenstijn in Beijing who had not expected to win a medal.

She won a place in the semi-final after beating the Brazilian Ketleyn Quadros and the Spaniard Isabel Fernandez, and then went on to beat China's Xu Yan in the quarter final.

The Dutch women sailors are doing well in Qingdao. In the 470 class, Lobke Berkhout and Marcelien de Koning hold overall first place, while Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes and Merel Witteveen are in second place in the Yngling competition, just three points behind the British team.

The Dutch men's hockey team has begun its tournament with a 5-0 victory against South Africa. In the first half Taeke Taekema scored in two penalty corners; in the second half, goals were scored by Laurence Docherty, Jeroen Hertzberger and Matthijs Brouwer.

China is leading in the medals tables followed by the USA and South Korea. The Netherlands is in ninth place with one gold, one silver and one bronze.
