Trees fell on roads and rail tracks, resulting in delays for commuters throughout the country.

The Netherlands – A severe thunderstorm over the Netherlands Monday night has caused substantial damage.

Over 600 kilometres of traffic jams were measured during the rush hour, putting Tuesday morning in sixth place in the top-10 worst ever congestions in the Netherlands.

Some roads are blocked by fallen trees, while others are cut off by flooding due to the excessive rain. In places in the south of the country, hailstones measuring 5 centimetres in diameter were reported.

On Tuesday morning, trains were delayed because railway workers had to clear track of branches and repair damaged overhead power cables – damage caused by lightning.

A website which tracks the weather in the Netherlands measured 200,000 bolts of lightning. Lighting also caused fires and power cuts in a number of towns.

The Dutch meteorological office, the KNMI, said the weather is not out of the ordinary for the time of year. The worst of the storm is over and is travelling towards the north-east.
