11/12/2008Licences for all sex companies: government

The Dutch government wants all businesses in the sex industry to apply for a licence and prosecute men who visit illegal prostitutes.

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government wants to introduce new legislation to tackle problems in prostitution.

In a new proposal drawn up by Interior Minister Guusje ter Horst and Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin, all businesses in the sex industry, including escort agencies will need to apply for a licence to operate. The licence will include conditions on the health and safety of prostitutes.

At the moment only brothels need a licence.

Men who visit illegal prostitutes may also be prosecuted and sentenced to six months in jail.

The draft legislation has been sent to local councils, police and lobby groups for review.
