The Coast Guard started cleaning up a large oil slick off the coast of Scheveningen on Sunday evening.

SCHEVENINGEN – The Coast Guard started cleaning up a large oil slick off the coast of Scheveningen on Sunday evening. The origin of the oil is not known. The substance is floating about 30 km off the coast of The Hague. There is little chance that it will wash ashore.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard reported this on Sunday. The oil slick was about 9 square km in surface area when it was discovered on Sunday morning. The slick had already shrunk considerably in the course of the evening. The oil clean-up craft Arca was deployed, in consultation with the North Sea public works and water management department.

The clean up operation will continue on Monday. The water police will investigate where the oil came from. The Coast Guard could not rule out that marine birds could be in danger because of the slick, though the crew of the Arca did not report seeing many contaminated animals.
