08/07/2008Kinderdijk windmills in Netherlands to be restored

A subsidy of EUR 2.5 million will be pumped in to help restore the UNESCO’s world heritage site that was built in the 18th century.

THE NETHERLANDS - The world famous Kinderdijk windmills are to be restored.

Most of the windmills in the Dutch village, which lies to the east of Rotterdam, are badly in need of repair because there has been no money for proper maintenance.
However, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has now provided a subsidy of EUR 2.5 million. This will pay for the large-scale restoration, from foundations to sails, of 11 of the 19 mills.

The windmills, which were built in the 18th century, have been listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites since 1997.
