12 August 2008

BEIJING - The Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Centre was free of rain on Monday, but Spanish tennis ended the day under a cloud as Nicolás Almagro, Tommy Robredo and David Ferrer all fell in the first round of the men's individual tournament.

Almagro lost to France's Gael Monfils in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, Robredo was a surprise victim of Italian Andreas Seppi, eventually losing 6-4, 4-6, 8-6, and Ferrer succumbed to Serbia's Tipsaveric 7-6, 6-2.

The gloom was lifted somewhat by a victory for world number one in-waiting Rafael Nadal, but even the star from Majorca surrendered a set before overcoming Italy's Potito Starace 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

He faces Australia's Lleyton Hewitt on Tuesday. There was better news in the doubles, with both Nadal-Robredo and Almagro-Ferrer progressing to the second round.

Although Carla Suarez and Anabel Medina lost their first-round matches, Medina losing to Austria's Sybille Bammer 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 and Suarez falling to China's Shuai Peng 7-5, 7-6, María José Martínez thrashed Alicia Molik of Australia 6-1, 6-1 and Nuria Llagostera beat the Czech Republic's Klara Zakopalova in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to keep the Spanish flag flying in the ladies' singles.

Elsewhere on day three of the games, Spain's field hockey team beat Belgium 4-2, Mireia Belmonte qualified for the semi-finals of the 200m swimming freestyle and Auschwin Wildeboer reached the final of the 100m backstroke.

Nina Zhivanevskaya, meanwhile, announced her retirement from swimming after being eliminated in the semi-finals of the same event.
