16/04/2009Giving birth at home as safe as hospital deliveries

A study of more than 500,000 women reveals giving birth at home is just as safe having your baby in the hospital.

The Netherlands – Home births are just as safe as hospital deliveries, according to a study of more than 500,000 women.

The first large-scale research on the safety of home births shows there is no correlation between high infant mortality rate in the Netherlands and giving birth at home.

The high infant mortality rate has often been blamed on the large number of home births as compared to hospital deliveries.

The study shows there is no difference between the infant death rate in the first week of the two groups.

Almost a third of pregnant women give birth at home in the Netherlands, far more than in other western countries.

The study was carried out by the TNO research institute, the AMC hospital in Amsterdam and the UMC hospital in Maastricht.

My friend gave birth in a hospital and the treatment she received was terrible - at one point, the staff were consulting a manual for the machine they were using because they didn't know how to use it - and of course, the Dutch are not know for their bedside manner. So perhaps giving birth at home is as safe because the hospitals are so shoddy???
