Ayaan Hirsi Ali will not gain anything in terms of security by becoming a French citizen.

PARIS/BRUSSELS - Ayaan Hirsi Ali will not gain anything in terms of security by becoming a French citizen. The French state protects citizens in the country itself, but only French diplomats receive protection abroad, the French ministry of foreign affairs reported on Wednesday.

Even as French citizen Ayaan Hirsi Ali will not get protection in the US. Since Hirsi Ali wants to continue to live and work in Washington, she should not count on French financing for her protection there.

"If a French citizen travels abroad, his protection is the responsibility of the local authorities. That is a general rule that applies all over the world. It is also difficult to change because it has to do with countries' sovereignty," the ministry in Paris added.

Exceptions to the rule will not apply to Hirsi Ali's situation. These only concern French politicians on visits abroad or French nationals in a war situation, as was the case recently in Chad. But there is no legislation to provide for the continuous protection of a (non-diplomatic) civilian abroad.

Hirsi Ali's protection in the US was paid for by the Netherlands until last year. Since then the cabinet has no longer financed this protection and Hirsi Ali has had to raise the funds herself.
