Dutch Finance Minister Wouter Bos says there will be no room for extra spending next year.

1 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - Finance Minister Wouter Bos says anyone asking for more money, be it companies, ordinary citizens or ministers, will be disappointed.

Although Mr Bos did not want to use the word recession, the cabinet thinks growth next year could be zero.

He said that hard times in the Netherlands seem unavoidable, but added that inflation will probably be low.

The finance minister says it remains to be seen what will be done with the profits made from insurance companies that have received government assistance.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said earlier that any profits would be used to pay off the national debt.
