The justice ministry is setting aside more funds to improve conditions at youth prisons in the next six years.

9 May 2008

THE HAGUE - The Dutch justice ministry is setting aside an extra EUR 285 million to improve conditions at youth prisons in the next six years.

The money will be used to attract more behavioural scientists and give prison staff additional training in a bid to end aggressive behaviour and violence in youth detention centres.

The news comes after Deputy Minister of Justice Nebahat Albayrak promised to take action after the publication of several critical reports on conditions in youth prisons.

Researchers from different organisations agreed that none of the fourteen youth prisons in The Netherlands functioned properly and that the safety of the detainees and staff could not be guaranteed.
