Leader of the conservative VVD party says the traffic problems in the Netherlands have passed the point of crisis.

16 May 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - The leader of the conservative VVD party, Mark Rutte, says the traffic problems in the Netherlands have passed the point of crisis.

In an address to the Dutch National Traffic Forum, Rutte accused the government of doing too little to solve the chronic traffic jams that afflict the country twice a day.

The opposition leader called for more investment in public transport and more money for building new roads. Rutte said the country needs an additional 4,000 kilometres of motorways and roads as soon as possible.

He also called for a simplification of the procedures leading to the construction of new roads and recommended that the government implement measures to promote working from home.
