30/05/2008Dutch to give EUR 1.3m for Palestinian prisons

The Netherlands’ contribution will go to renovating seven Palestinian prisons in the West Bank.

30 May 2008

THE NETHERLANDS - The Netherlands is contributing EUR 1.3 million for the renovation of seven Palestinian prisons in the West Bank.

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has struck the deal with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who is improving the territory's security and justice apparatus.

Verhagen says it is important that Palestinians are able to put their trust in the judicial authorities and the police. He believes that improving prison conditions is part of the process.

Palestinian prisons are in a poor state and often unusable. Sometimes ordinary houses have to be rented to detain prisoners.

I guess improving prisons are more important than setting prisoners of politics free and feeding the thousands that are starving in Gaza. Perhaps more money should be sent to Myanmar to improve the prison conditions there and to Guantanamo to improve the conditions there also, instead of sending food and other articles necessary for sustenance. The Colonial mentality of past years still ligers.
