23/03/2009Dutch tax evaders step forward

About 120 people have declared their foreign assets to the tax authorities in the past six weeks.

THE NETHERLANDS – Over 100 Dutch citizens have reported their foreign assets to the Netherlands' tax authorities in the past six weeks.

According to the Ministry of Finance, about 121 people have submitted requests to pay back bank taxes totalling almost EUR 24 million.

People who are asking to pay back taxes will nether be fined nor subject to punishment due to a 2001’s repentance ruling, which has since earned the Dutch treasure EUR 180 million.

It is believed that the sudden rise in people stepping forward to report their foreign assets is due to the relaxation of the banking secrecy laws in Switzerland, Luxembourg and Andorra and the announcement that Dutch financial investigators would be actively looking at tax havens for undeclared funds.
