22/07/2008Dutch drivers in favour of breathalyser locks

A majority of Dutch drivers who took part in a survey say they are in favour of fitting their vehicles with a breathalyzer lock.

22 July 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – Most Dutch drivers polled would like to have a breathalyzer lock fitted in their vehicles, reveal a recent survey.

According to the results of a questionnaire distributed to 500 Dutch drivers, a majority if the drivers are in favour of plans to require all vehicles to be fitted with a breathalyser lock.

Sixty percent say they never drink alcohol if they are going to drive. About 25 percent admitted to having a drink but say they stayed below the limit. Almost 20 percent said they regularly ask someone else to drive and a similar percentage said they are always the designated driver.

Two percent admitted to driving while drunk.

When asked to rate the most irritating aspects of driving on Dutch roads, the respondents put drunk drivers in third place.

Dutch Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings recently proposed that people who have been repeatedly convicted for drink-driving offences be required to have breathalyser locks installed in their vehicles.
