03/12/2008Dutch TV show leads to more free food applicants

A Dutch television programme broadcasting how a famous Dutch singer and his family survive on social benefits has helped people overcome their shame and ask for help.

3 December 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – A programme on a Dutch commercial television channel has led to an increase in the number of people registering for free food, according to the Association of Dutch Food Banks (SVN).

The programme, Flat Broke, follows a famous Dutch singer, his wife and their four children as they attempt to survive on social benefits. The SVN says the programme helped people to overcome their shame and ask for help.

The organisation says the number of people registering has jumped dramatically.

In Rotterdam, the number of new registrations went from 12 to 70 in a week. There are 80 food banks in the Netherlands.
