27/05/2008Coalition parties divided on embryo selection

The Labour Party is for test-tube embryos tested for hereditary form of breast cancer and implanted in the mother’s womb while the Christian Union is not.

27 May 2008

The coalition parties are divided on Deputy Health Minister Jet Bussemaker's plan to have all test-tube embryos tested for a hereditary form of breast cancer.

Only healthy embryos would then be implanted in the mother's womb. The Labour Party is in favour of the plan, but the Christian Union is opposed, and the Christian Democrats have yet to decide.

Christian Union MP Esmé Wiegman says some embryos will be destroyed as a result of the tests. The party is opposed on principle to the destruction of embryos, which they regard as human life.

The deputy health minister said she wanted to give women a chance to prevent passing on a hereditary form of breast cancer to their daughters.
