13/08/2008Belgian Tim Maeyens advances to skiff finals

Maeyens came in third in the semi-finals, giving Belgium reason to rejoice after a row of disappointments at other sports.

13 August 2008

BEIJING – Good news spell for Belgium as Tim Maeyens has been placed for the skiff final at the Olympics in China.

Tim Maeyens finished third in the semi-finals, advancing to the finals.  He came in after the Swedish and Norwegian contestants. The skiff final is Saturday.

In 2004 Athens Olympics, Tim Maeyens also rowed in the skiff final.

In beach volleyball Liesbeth Mouha and Liesbet Van Breedam have placed for the next round. They won their first match in these games beating the Swiss team in 2 sets of 21-18 and 21-17.

In rowing, Bart Poelvoorde and Christophe Raes have been eliminated in the doubles competition. They came in fifth in the semi-finals. Only the first three go on to the finals.

In sailing, Evi Van Acker drops from the second place to the sixth in the Laser-Radial class. In the third regatta Van Acker took a 16th place. There is still one race left to go.

No Belgian medals in judo
For the first time since 1984, Belgium did not win any Olympic medals in judo.

Cathérine Jacques has now also been eliminated in the Judo Women's 70 kg category. She lost her first encounter against Ylenia Scapin of Italy.
Because Scapin lost her second competition, the disappointed Cathérine Jacques is not eligible for a second chance in the repechage.

Earlier in the week Dirk Van Tichelt came very close to a medal in the Judo Men's 73 kg. In the battle for bronze Dirk Van Tichelt was beaten by Rasul Boqiev of Tajikistan in the repechage. The Belgian had to settle for a fifth place.

At the weekend another serious candidate for a medal, judoka Ilse Heylen had to leave the Olympics empty-handed after losing, also in the repechage, for the Women's 53 kg. Ilse Heylen took the bronze at the previous Summer Olympic Games in Athens. She ended 7th this time.
