12/03/2008Balkenende to ask colleagues for support this week

Balkenende will talk with his European colleagues about the standpoint the Netherlands wants the EU to take with regard to the film expected from MP Geert Wilders (Freedom party PVV).

12 March 2008

THE HAGUE – During the European summit in Brussels this week Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will talk with his colleagues about the standpoint the Netherlands wants the EU to take with regard to the film expected from MP Geert Wilders (Freedom party PVV).

State secretary for European Affairs Frans Timmermans told Parliament this on Tuesday.

Parliament fears that the Netherlands will have to ask the member states for support as Denmark did at the time of the cartoon affair. But Timmermans says this fear is ungrounded.

The cabinet has a good idea of the standpoints of the European heads of state and they will staunchly support the freedom of expression, he said.

In Denmark's case Europe was taken by surprise, he added. He referred questions about Balkenende's exact plans to the debate that Parliament will hold with the prime minister Wednesday morning.
