Amsterdam wants to reduce the number of brothels, sex shops and massage parlours in its red light district.

AMSTERDAM - Amsterdam wants to reduce the number of brothels, sex shops and massage parlours in its red light district.

It also wants to limit the number of phone and souvenir shops. The capital's city council says such places often provide cover for organised crime, which it has vowed to stamp out.

The council wants to revitalise the city centre by bringing in more hotels, restaurants and cafes as well as cultural venues and craft shops.

The capital expects the refurbishment to take some ten years.
