Health workers are concerned about the sudden surge in number of people infected with sexually transmitted diseases over the past year.

THE NETHERLANDS – The number of people who became infected with sexually transmitted diseases in Amsterdam has risen drastically in 2008 as compared to a year before.

Figures released by Amsterdam's health service show infections, including HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, and Hepatitis C are on the increase.

A record number of HIV cases of 178 were diagnosed while number of chlamydia infections in people under 20 showed an explosive increase, said health officials.

The rise in cases of syphilis (15 percent) and Hepatitis C was most marked in homosexual men. Hepatitis C is being seen increasingly in gay men who are HIV positive. Only about 60 percent of such cases respond to treatment. When left untreated, Hepatitis C can lead to major problems such as liver cancer.

Health workers, alarmed by the steady and steep rise, feared they may soon face a peak in infections comparable to that of the mid-1980s.
