22 September 2008

THE NETHERLANDS -- More than 20 Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Maastricht and Eindhoven took part in a car-free Sunday where no cars were allowed on the road.

The car-free Sunday, an initiative of the environment ministry, was held for the 10th year in a row. The motto of the car-free day is: ‘Travel healthy in a clean city’.

In Amsterdam, the car-free zones extended over the entire area within the A10, with the exception of Zeeburg. People were encouraged to walk, cycle and use public transport in the within the city and the Park & Ride service.

Amsterdam organised around 100 special events, including a race through the city centre for zero-emission cars.

The authorities in Amsterdam reported that the majority of the public enjoyed the day, although there were a few reports of drivers who got angry when they were barred from entering the city.

One person was arrested for not heeding police instructions.
