29/06/200725,000 show up for veterans

29 June 2007

THE HAGUE - Some 25,000 to 30,000 people braved the rain in The Hague today to attend the ceremonies staged for Dutch Veterans' Day.

Some 45,000 people came to the event last year in sunny weather.

The stands along the procession route in the centre were partly empty. Only at spot where Crown Prince Willem-Alexander was watching the parade was the crowd several rows deep. Nonetheless there was a positive atmosphere among spectators, veterans and active soldiers.

Most veterans wore a carnation, as did some soldiers in uniform, despite the fact that this is not "officially allowed." Prince Willem-Alexander had been granted a special dispensation to wear a flower on his uniform.

The carnation was the trademark of his grandfather Prince Bernhard, who had made repeated calls for more recognition for veterans during his lifetime.
