19/03/2010Georgian officials brief ICC prosecutors on war with Russia

Georgian officials briefed International Criminal Court prosecutors this week on efforts to bring to book the alleged perpetrators of abuses in the 2008 war with Russia, the court said on Friday.

A Georgian delegation led by Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili met chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in The Hague on Wednesday, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

"The delegation presented Georgia's views on the alleged crimes perpetrated during the armed conflict that took place in Georgia in August, 2008, including forced displacement of civilians," said the statement.

"They also briefed the prosecutor on the ongoing investigations in Georgia into grave violations committed by all parties to the conflict."

Moreno-Ocampo's office announced in August 2008 that it was examining possible war crimes, days after the neighbours ended a five-day war over Russian-backed South Ossetia.

Earlier this month, ICC prosecutors were also briefed on Russian efforts to probe alleged abuses.

The ICC can only prosecute suspected war criminals if countries are unable or unwilling to do so.

Georgia is a state party to the founding Rome Statute of the ICC, which therefore has jurisdiction over crimes committed on its territory. Russia is not a state party.
