Author A.F.Th. van der Heijden has won the Libris Literature Prize 2012 for his novel Tonio. The prize comes with 50,000 euros.
The novel is based on the tragic accident of Van der Heijden’s only son. Twenty-one-year-old Tonio was hit by a car near the Vondel Park in Amsterdam.
The jury praised the book, “All registers that go with death and grief are described with superiority: from announcement to reconciliation and denial, from fury to acceptance. In the closing choir of this symphony of death, you can hear hope, however merciless it seems after the previous incidents.''
