Authorities in Romania and the Netherlands have arrested 17 people after fraudsters stole more than 90 million euros ($119 million) by duplicating the details of bank cards, Dutch police said Thursday.

A spokeswoman said that Dutch officers had arrested two suspects late last month while Romanian police had nabbed 15, six of whom were directly sought in connection with the fraud.

The ring is suspected of stealing some 36 million euros from bank accounts in 2009, 20 million in 2010, and about 36 million again last year, police spokeswoman Jelleke van Rantwijk told AFP.

The ring stole details contained on banking cards, many of them at petrol stations, and used them to withdraw money abroad, including from banks in the Dominican Republic.
