Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is the first Dutch player to have become top scorer in the qualification matches of a European championship. The 28-year –old striker scored 12 goals in just eight matches.
Only Northern Ireland player David Healy ever scored more goals: 13 in 12 qualification matches in the qualification matches ahead of the 2008 European Championship.
Croatian Davor Suker scored 12 goals ahead of the 1996 European Championship, but needed two more matches than the Dutch striker.
Earlier famous top scorers include German Gerd Müller 1972, 7 goals, his compatriot Karl-Heinz Rummenigge 1984, 7 goals, Spaniard Raul 2000, 11 goals and Briton Kevin Keegan 1980, 7 goals.
