11/11/2011Far-right party wants study on Dutch eurozone exit

Dutch far-right party PVV will order a study on the consequences of the Netherlands leaving the eurozone and the reintroduction of its former currency, the guilder, its leader said Friday.

"The government is trying to scare us by saying that the lights will go out if we give up the euro," said Geert Wilders.

"This will certainly cost money but I want to know if the reintroduction of the guilder will not ultimately make us richer," he told the mass circulation Telegraaf.

If the study which is to be carried out by a "big international cabinet" confirms this, the PVV will call for a referendum to decide on the Netherlands' withdrawal from the 17-member eurozone, added Wilders whose party backs the centre-right government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte in parliament.

Rutte rejected the idea as "a bad plan".

A return to the guilder would "in every respect be a recipe for disaster", Rutte told a press briefing after a meeting of his cabinet.

Rutte said the common European currency was of "enormous interest" for the Netherlands.

"More than 70 percent of the Netherlands' prosperity comes from overseas and 70 percent of its exports go to the eurozone," he said.

The PVV has 24 of the 150 seats in parliament and is notoriously eurosceptic and critical of financial aid given to debt-stricken Greece.

What do readers think ? I would say yes or no to Wilders idea but am not sure I know enough to answer sensibly. Could be his idea is good but there's a lot of fear of a change
