Dutch police have arrested an Iraqi man suspected of wanting to join Al-Qaeda in Syria and planning to commit an attack, prosecutors said Friday.

"The man wanted to travel to Syria to join Al-Qaeda and then possibly commit an attack in Iraq or Palestine," said a statement issued by the public prosecutors' office in Rotterdam.

Dutch secret service (AIVD) agents tracked the man, 34, after an investigation into Islamic extremist networks. He was not identified.

The man, who lived in Almere, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) east of Amsterdam, was arrested on Tuesday, the statement said.

He appeared before a Dutch court Friday on a charge of being "suspected of being involved in terrorism" and his case was remanded for two weeks, it added.
