17/09/2009Wilders proposes shocking headscarf tax

The headscarf tax of EUR 1,000 would apply only to Muslim women, says the Freedom Party leader.

The Hague – Leader of the far-right Freedom Party Geert Wilders came under the media’s spotlight again when he proposed implementing an annual Muslim headscarf tax at the annual political debate Thursday.

The proposed tax of EUR 1,000 would apply only to Muslim women who want to wear the headscarf and not orthodox Christian women who don a similar headscarf.

Wilders did not explain how his proposed policy would distinct between the two religious headscarves.

All money received from the taxes would proceed to women's emancipation programmes.

The politician also said that Muslim women who want to wear headscarves should apply for a permit.

His proposal was met with much opposition in the Dutch parliament.

Nos.nl writes that Minister of Housing, Communities and Integration Van der Laan called the proposal "silly and hysterical".

D66 leader Alexander Pechtold accused Wilders of being xenophobic and for making racist statements against Muslims, reports nu.nl

This is not the first time Wilders has made such a shocking statement. In 2007, he called for the banning the Muslim holy book, the Quran and last year, he warned that Muslims were colonising the Netherlands.

While I agree with just about everything that Wilders says about radical Islam and Islam in general, a tax on muslim women wearing a headscarf is going overboard. Shame on you Wilders, just when you had the Dutch public taking you seriously, you come up with something like this.

Sorry but this guy wilders is an idiot - how could anyone ever take him seriously?!

Just open your eyes. He is one of the few politicians that wants/will do what it takes to curb radical Islam. Unless one wnats their society to be overtaken by radicals, one must start clamping down on radical Islamists or any radicals for that matter. Expulsion of non citizens is a good start. If radical Islamists do not bother you, I am sure that Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc, will welcome you with open arms.

Wilders is a clown. Always has been, always will be. He was taken seriously by a small (far-right-leaning) percentage of the Dutch, but he's just trying to divert attention from his upcoming racism trial, yet all the time he adds fuel to the fire.

Taxing a muslim woman for wearing a headscarf is as ludicrous as taxing a Christian woman for wearing a bra.

Dan,

You must be a real expert in Islamic studies to come up with such clever statements....people like you scare me more than Wilders.

Dan, are you serious? This guy wants to eliminate the religion overall not just extremists. How can you take away the right from someone to choose what they want to wear? Looks to me that it's people like you and Wilder that are extremists.. You criticise the islamic way of living just like they criticise yours! and AGAIN you are using FORCE to make people make choices that they don't want to! Isn't that terrorism?

Wow, those Christian cons need to loosen their ties and let some oxygen flow to their brains! More racist claptrap... what is happening to my beautiful Netherlands?
So, Dan, it\\\'s okay to be a racist, radical Christian, but not a modest Muslim woman? Why is it okay for Christian women to move to African countries and continue wearing European clothing?...but not the other way around?
