Two 220-kilo bombs were found, then deactivated, during construction in Zwolle on Saturday morning.

6 October 2008

AMSTERDAM -- Bomb disposal experts deactivated two 500 pound (227 kilo) bombs discovered in Zwolle during construction work on a new railway bridge over the River IJssel.

The bombs were dropped at the end of World War II by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in an attempt to destroy the crossing between the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland.

River and train traffic in the area were diverted throughout Saturday morning while the bombs were deactivated, and then destroyed in controlled explosions.
