22/03/2009Trade union rejects government's crisis proposals

In a recent interview with newspaper De Telegraaf, FNV Chair Agnes Jongerius has rejected as unacceptable a number of measures proposed by Social Affairs Minister Piet Hein Donner.

THE NETHERLANDS - The FNV, the Netherlands' main trade union federation, is currently involved in three-way talks with employers organisations and the cabinet in an attempt to reach a 'social accord' to fight the current economic crisis.

According to Jongerius, Minister Donner wants to introduce a three-year wage freeze by re-negotiating current collective labour agreements or concluding new ones for a three-year period.

In the De Telegraaf interview, the FNV chair says this would give workers a choice "between the first or the second gallows, but hang you will".

The FNV is also opposed to the social affairs minister's proposal to raise the retirement age to 67. Jongerius said that there had been little progress on any of the major issues.
