08/05/2009Queen’s Day attacker must have gone mad: parents

Karst Tates' parents described him as a kind and considerate person who was close to his family and had nothing against the Dutch royal family.

THE NETHERLANDS –Parents of the man who drove his car at high speed into a crowd who had gathered for the annual Queen's Day royal procession in Apeldoorn said the tragic events took them completely by surprise.

In an interview with news agency ANP, the parents of Karst Tates said they had no inkling that their son was likely to carry out such an attack.

Tates was believed to be targeting the bus which the royal family was seated on. His attack left seven people dead, including himself, and left many others injured.

Tates’ parents said the last time they spoke to him was on Queen's Day eve, when he called his mother to wish her a happy birthday.

According to his parents, Tates had nothing against the royal family or Queen Beatrix, whom he saw as "a stable factor".

They describe their son as a kind and considerate person who did not have friends but was close to his family.

A few years ago, Tates became homeless and spent some time living in a tent after having got into debt. However, he managed to find a job and a place to live, and paid off his debts.

In autumn 2008, while working in a factory, he clashed with his employers, whom he felt had treated him unfairly.

Nevertheless, in the past month his parents had been under the impression that his life was actually improving.

"He must have gone mad at that moment," his father concluded. "This was not the Karst we know."
