The Netherlands - Two days before his death in 2004, Prince Bernhard, the father of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, requested that the annual Liberation Day parade on 5 May end. He only wanted a Veterans' Day to be held on his birthday on 29 June instead.

The request was made in a letter, which has just been published, from the Prince to Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende. Regional newspaper De Gelderlander demanded the publication of the letter under the Government Information Act. The prime minister was against its publication.

The letter was the reason why the annual parade in Wageningen was scrapped and the national Veterans' Day introduced on 29 June. Now the event is held on the Saturday closest to this date.

Veterans' organisations have always doubted the existence of the letter. They were convinced that Prince Bernhard did not want the Liberation Day parade scrapped. The publication of the letter now proves them wrong.

Prince Bernhard died on 1 December 2004 at the age of 93.
