Population of the Netherlands grew by 50,000 last year

Most of the increase is due to population growth in the biggest local authority areas, the CBS said.

In the rest of the country, the birth rate declined and people left to move to the bigger cities.

The Netherlands now has 30 local authority areas with a population of over 100,000, up five on 2009.

These are Alphen aan den Rijn, Delft, Leeuwarden, Venlo and Westland, the CBS said.
