15/10/2008Petten reactor remains closed until February

The nuclear reactor needs “more complex” repairs, which may worsen shortages of medical isotopes.

15 October 2008

AMSTERDAM -- The operators of the nuclear research reactor in Petten announced that the facility will remain closed until mid-February.

The Petten facility was closed on 21 August after a month-long maintenance operation revealed air bubbles in the cooling system.

In September, the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) announced that the reactor would remain closed until November. But on Tuesday an NRG representative said the repair work was “more complex” than originally thought.

The Petten research reactor produces between 30 and 40 percent of the world's medical isotopes, which are used in cancer treatments and diagnoses. Hospitals in Europe are facing shortages since other suppliers are struggling to meet demand, but NRG says patients are not at risk.
