Women who work less than 25 hours per week and would like to work more often do not succeed in doing so, reveals study.

The Netherlands – Most women who work less than 25 hours per week and would like to work more have been told by their employers that it is not possible, reports nu.nl

According to a recent publication by the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP), one in five women who work less than 25 hours a week would love to work longer, but less than half of them usually succeed in doing so.

The survey was ordered by the government-sponsored Task Force Part Time Plus, which is charged with investigating how to increase the number of hours of part-time jobs.

In the Netherlands, 70 percent of the Dutch women work. About half of them work less than 25 hours a week.

In the report, six in 10 women say they won’t mind working a few more hours if better working conditions were provided such as more opportunities to work from home and a better work-life balance.

In the report, employers in many sectors are used to having women work part-time. Only 13 percent of companies have policies that support part-time jobs.

AD reports the cabinet will have great difficulty realising its stated objective of making women with part-time jobs work more hours as the survey also showed most women are quite happy with the (low) number of hours they work at present.

However, the SCP says the Task Force could play a major role in breaking the traditional pattern. “Much would be gained, if the extension of part time jobs were seriously considered more often.”

The cabinet wants women to work more hours in an attempt to increase the financial basis of the welfare state and to promote emancipation.
